| Singers participate either in the OPERA STUDIO or the CONCERT STUDIO
(German Lieder). Both include the Audition Training Seminar, a course in auditioning (in
English and German) and communication techniques that are individualized for your career plans. This unique course
is very helpful to musicians at the college/conservatory level and a necessity for those beginning a career in classical music.
Other important aspects of attending AIMS include the opportunity to compare yourself to a group of peers from all of North America
and other countries and the contacts you will make..
The curriculum involves singers in extensive work in vocal technique, diction, psychological, musical and dramatic preparation for performing and auditioning, body movement, literary and historical studies, and the stagecraft to present their repertoire. The AIMS approach fosters a professional attitude toward the art, craft, and business of vocal music throughout the program. Participants are exposed directly to the practices and competitiveness of the music world. Advanced participants may be asked to audition for artists agents. No other program offers more for singers than AIMS in Graz. Opera Studio for Singers The Opera Studio prepares singers for performing opera at the professional
level. This studio is for singers at all stages of development, from those finishing degrees to the professional level.
Concentration is on the standard operatic repertoire (German, Italian, French) with emphasis on the works of Mozart and
Strauss. Operetta is offered as an optional elective. Opera Studio participants work closely with European and American
opera coaches, conductors and stage directors. There are many performance opportunities in the AIMS Recital and Festival Concert
Series, including recitals, master classes, concerts with the AIMS Festival Orchestra, the Meistersinger Vocal Competition and
special events presented by resident and visiting faculty, eminent artists and conductors. Students may receive certification or
grades in courses and apply for academic credit at the institutions in which they are enrolled. The following courses and events

Concert Studio deals with the preparation and presentation of concert repertoire for singers. The emphasis is on the study of the
German Lied, German diction, the poetry of the Lied, historical aspects and composers of Lieder, and exploring European standards
of style and execution. Concert Studio participants work closely with established professional coaches and pianists. The culmination
of the Concert Studio experience is the presentation of a Liederabend in Graz.
The Harold Heiberg Liedersänger Preis A prize is presented annually to the outstanding Lieder singer honoring the beloved AIMS Lieder coach, Harold Heiberg, who taught at AIMS for 34 summers. Professor Heiberg was an AIMS participant in 1969, the first year the Summer Vocal Institute was held in Germany. He returned the following year as a faculty member and continued teaching at AIMS until 2007. His renown as a Lied scholar, pianist, coach and accompanist, spread throughout the United States as students came to Graz to study. All Concert Studio singers are eligible for the prize. The "Liedersänger" prize winner will be chosen by a panel of faculty members based on the final Liederabende performances of the two Concert Studio sections. The prize carries a cash award of $1000 and will be presented to the winner at the final concert of the summer, The Meistersinger Concert.
